What Will The New Law Do?

New law aims to keep people safe and aims to scale up preparedness for, and protection from, terrorist attacks.
Martyn’s Law aims to ensure better protection against the continued and evolving threat that the UK faces from terrorism.

What's Required Under Martyn's Law

A detailed analysis and threat assessment and security plan; with the inclusion of protective security measures where they are practicable to achieve; are required to protect your customers and your business against the continued and evolving threat that the UK faces from a variety of potential acts of terrorism and individual lone wolves.

Including but not limited to - Explosive Devices delivered by Vehicle, People or by Post; CBRN Devices; Suicide Bombers & Attackers; Shootings & Close Quarter Attacks using any form of Weapon or Blade and the use of fire & corrosive materials such as acids as a weapon.

How Will Martyn's Law Be Enforced

An inspection process to seek to educate, advise, and ensure compliance with the Duty. Where necessary, the inspectorate will use a range of sanctions to ensure that breaches are effectively dealt with.

How will Government ensure complying with Martyn’s Law doesn’t create undue burden on businesses?

Government is carefully considering the impact on premises and locations that may be captured under Martyn’s Law. This includes ensuring requirements placed on Duty holders are proportionate whilst achieving better public security, and without placing undue burden on parties responsible for public places. However, it is reasonable that many locations should take appropriate and proportionate measures to protect their staff and the public.
